DECEMBER 2009
SKILLS DAY will occur on December 12, 2009, at Lincoln Middle School in Portland, Maine. There will be two sessions to choose from. Registration begins at 8:30 for the 9:00-12:00 morning session . Registration begins at 12:30 for the afternoon session which will run from 1:00 to 4:00.
The school is located at 522 Stevens Avenue, between Evergreen Cemetery and Deering High School. Directions to the school can be found in the DIRECTIONS section of this web site.
Snacks, drinks, resource materials and Odyssey of the Mind merchandise will be available for purchase throughout the day.
Because space is limited, we ask that parents and coaches not attend the sessions with the students. Students may travel in pairs but entire teams may not register for the same workshop. Teams should try to cover many varied choices and teach each other what they learned.
Explanation of Choices
Primary teams and beginner teams in Division I may choose to participate together in the special introductory program. They will be given an opportunity to identify and explore the full range of skills needed to complete a long-term problem. This program will fill the full time of either the morning or afternoon session .
The Menu of choices for Division I, II and III teams includes:
A. BALSA. This is for those doing the structure problem and offers the opportunity to become familiar with the material before actually tackling the problem. This program is extended in time and counts for 2 choices. A maximum of 10 students can be accommodated in this class. No more than 2 members of the same team may participate.
B. ELECTRICITY. This covers skills involving wiring and do’s and don’ts in dealing with electricity. A maximum of 12 students can be accommodated in this class.
C. CARPENTRY. There’s more to Odyssey of the Mind than cardboard and duct tape! Working with wood, metal, or other materials requires safe use of saws, screwdrivers, and other tools. Build your confidence around tools by working on a surprise project. This program is extended in time and counts for 2 choices. A maximum of 10 students can be accommodated in this class. No more than 2 members of the same team.
D. COSTUMES. Making a good costume doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. Participants will investigate various materials, and create costumes with or without sewing. A maximum of 20 students can be accommodated in each class. This program is extended in time and counts for 2 choices. No more than 2 members of the same team.
E. PERFORMING. Learn the secrets of “stage presence” – how to deliver your lines confidently, block your movements on stage, and really wow the judges.
F. IMPROVISATIONAL STORYTELLING will engage students in developing a story line and carrying it through, free of the fear of “forgotten lines”.
G. PLOTS BY PRESCRIPTION will offer students a creative challenge and a new experience in script development.
H. SOUND EFFECTS. Storms, approaching footsteps, babbling brooks, strange noises in the dark! Such additions can truly enhance your performance. Learn how to create the atmosphere you need .
I. CREATE COOPERATIVELY/COOPERATE CREATIVELY! Strategies for team building.
J. PROPS – FUNCTION AND EFFECTIVE USE will offer students a new way to create and benefit from the use of unique props.
K. CREATIVE CHARACTERIZATION will introduce students to unique ways to develop and portray characters through both verbal and nonverbal clues. A maximum of 15 students in each class.
Several of these offerings are new and take a unique, creative approach , We believe that older and experienced Omers will find them an interesting experience .
